-
Conducting interviews

Paper and digital wire-framing
-
Low and high-fidelity prototyping

-
Design iteration
Project duration
January 2022 to February 2022
Understanding the user
I conducted user interviews where most interview participants reported feeling overwhelmed looking for a job and anxious because they were not sure how the process works in their new country. The feedback received through research made it very clear that users would be open to having a mentor to help them feel integrated into the culture and guide them to find a job with an easy-to-use tool.
Persona and problem statement

Kim is a first-generation immigrant who needs to find a new job because she recently moved to the country.
Kevin is a student who needs guidance to find a job because he feels insecure about his work experience.

Competitive audit
An audit of a few competitor products provided direction on gaps and opportunities to address with the Starjob app and website.

Ideation
I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on job search and job lists.

Digital wireframes
After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the Starjob app. These designs focused on delivering easy access to the services offered, such as job search and guidance.

Usability study findings
Findings helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups.

Redefine the design
Mockups
Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a clear section from the ‘search’ section to the ‘built your future’ and ‘job bank’ section.

Adding design changes including a 5-star rating of the company based on former employees' reviews.
Also, include in the review box pros and cons of the company.

Accessibility considerations
1. Provided access to users who are visually impaired through adding alt text to images for screen readers.
2. Use of icons and text to help make navigation easier.
Refining designs

High-fidelity prototype
The high-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including design changes made after the usability study.

With the app designs completed, I started work on designing the responsive website. I used the Starjob sitemap to guide the organizational structure of each screen’s design to ensure a cohesive and consistent experience across devices.

Takeaways
Impact
Users shared that the app made them feel confident applying to job offers. One quote from peer feedback was that “Starjob app makes me feel secure and positive from start to that I’m qualified for what I love to do.”
What I learned
While designing the Starjob app, I learned how important it is to create all screen sizes to have the best experience for the users.
Next steps
1. Conduct research on how successful the app is in reaching the goal.
2. Add more educational and guidance resources for users looking for jobs and to prepare them for future interviews.
